  • Florals (e.g., magnolia and poinsettia)
  • Ornaments
  • Filler sprays
  • Glue gun and floral wire

Recommended Products for a 9-Foot Garland

For a beautifully decorated 9-foot garland, here's what you'll need:

  • Ribbon: 1-10 yard roll of ribbon per style (2 styles recommended)
  • Flowers: 7 flowers (3 of one style and 4 of another)
  • Sprays: 12 sprays (6 each of 2 styles)
  • Ornaments: 16 ornaments (4 each of 4 styles)

How to Make a Christmas Garland

Step 1: Adding Lights

The magical glow of lights is essential for any festive garland. Begin by folding your cluster lights in half to find the middle point. Start wrapping the middle point of the lights to the middle of the garland and then attach the ends to the garland ends. For even distribution, quarter the garland and zigzag the lights through each section.

Step 2: Incorporating Ribbon

Ribbon adds texture and color to your Christmas garland decorations. Use 10 yards of ribbon per style for a nine-foot garland and cut your ribbon into manageable lengths. Fold the ribbon in half to create fishtail ends, then make loops and jogs to avoid symmetry, securing it with the greenery. Add accent ribbon by using smaller loops or "fake bows" on top of the main ribbon to add depth and variation.

Step 3: Adding Florals

Florals bring life and vibrancy to your garland. Choose two styles of florals, such as magnolia and poinsettia, and alternate them along the garland. Trim the stems to appropriate lengths, hook them into the garland, and use glue for extra stability.

Step 4: Ornaments

Ornaments add sparkle and a personal touch. Select ornaments of different sizes, textures, and colors that complement your Christmas garland decorations. Divide the garland into sections and place the ornaments consistently in each section, securing them with floral wire and glue.

Step 5: Filler Sprays

Filler sprays complete the look by filling in gaps and adding texture. Cut the filler sprays into smaller pieces and place them in any remaining gaps, alternating heights for a natural look. Glue them in place to ensure they stay securely.

How to Decorate Garland on Your Mantle

Decorating Tips for Your Mantle

When decorating your mantle, it's essential to choose a theme and stick to a color palette to create a cohesive look. Think in layers—lights, ribbon, florals, ornaments, and sprays—to build depth and interest. Use different textures and balance elements on both sides of the garland to achieve a harmonious appearance.

Creative Ideas for Your DIY Christmas Garland

For a rustic charm, incorporate burlap ribbon, pinecones, and natural elements. If you prefer a glamorous touch, opt for glittery ornaments, metallic ribbons, and luxurious florals. For a traditional Christmas look, use red and green ribbons, classic ornaments, and traditional poinsettias.

Creating a Christmas garland for your mantle is a fun and rewarding project that brings the holiday spirit into your home. With these steps and tips, you can design a garland that reflects your style and adds a festive touch to your decor.
