Traditional and Farmhouse Fall Decor Ideas

Aug 26th 2020

Hello fall! You are welcome to come early and bring cooler weather, cable-knit sweaters, chunky ankle boots, and a cozy fall mantel. It’s so nice to know that one of our favorite seasons and autumn decor is coming — and that the cheer of the holidays will be trailing right behind. Today, we're offering up our best traditional and fall farmhouse decorating ideas!

Fall Decorations for your Farmhouse or Neutral Looks

Fall inspirations remind us of what we have to be thankful for. They offers us time to wind down from the summer hustle and gives us permission to renew and reflect on what matters most — friends, family, our current life blessings, and future hope.

Decorating with fall decor in mind is the official kickoff to our seasonal joy and festivity. And who doesn’t want to get a head start on that?!

When do I decorate for fall?

Some people think that as soon as school shopping is finished, it’s time to break out the oranges, plaid, and fall inspired Pinterest boards. Others feel very strongly about waiting until summer is officially over and opt to decorate in mid to late-September.

Wherever you are in this mix, be sure to have a simple but strategic process of taking out the summeresque items and filling your home with pumpkins, throw pillows, a cozy feel, and warm fall colors.

As you’re planning your home reset, here’s a weekly step-by-step plan to bringing all your seasonal decor pieces together. We recommend starting this process in the first or second week of September.

The process of bringing in fall decor

Week 1 — Clean Up Your Spaces

  • Takedown your summer florals and accents in your main living room and other high-traffic areas.
  • Clean up the patio and grill area, making room for flower pots with fall colors.
  • Look at what you have for fall home decor. Donate any unwanted items. Go through your inspiration boards and decide on design directions.
  • Bonus: Do a fall-cleaning, tackling the refrigerator, windows, and other often neglected items! You’ll feel ready to fill your home with a new scene when it's fresh.

Week 2 — Plan and Purchase

  • Plan out the ideal look you’re going for (farmhouse fall style, festive fun, or modern glam) in each room and form a shopping list for the items you need or the new palette you’re focusing on. Are you going for a rustic decorative appeal or some neutral colors and pops of orange?
  • Break out a fall-scented candle and fall-flavored tea or coffee.
  • Purchase items to make that fall diy — maybe a new fall swag or a wreath for your door.
  • Bonus: Get a few of your friends to join you in the process and host a crafting party to create beautiful front door decorations!

Week 3 — Finish Fall DIYs

  • If you haven’t yet, finish assembling your door piece (swag or wreath) and other items you're DIYing.
  • Purchase any remaining new items you need for your living spaces.
  • Take a trip to a local farmers market and get some natural elements to use throughout your home.
  • Bonus: Craft a fun fall inspired hot cocoa and coffee bar with your favorite fall mugs.

Week 4 — Get Your Fall Decor Up!

  • Put out your door swag or wreath, fall garland, and tablescapes.
  • Have fun decorating with an array of orange, green, and white pumpkins, mums, and other items for a grand entryway and fall porch. Don’t forget to share a little love with your extra spaces and bathrooms!
  • Cook your favorite fall recipes and share the goodies with friends and neighbors.
  • Bonus: Take out a Christmas tree to use as a fall Christmas tree, giving your home a more festive feel for October and November.
