Much like your tree, Christmas wreaths are highly versatile and can be used to add a touch of seasonal light and color pretty much anywhere there’s an open space.
This short guide will explore the versatility of these special elements of Christmas greenery, giving you some insight into where to hang them and how to decorate them.
Let’s dive right in!
Where to Hang Your Christmas Wreaths
First, you need to take a step back and see where there’s a good opportunity to hang your wreath. Chances are there’s a blank space closer than you think that’s just begging for a little Christmas greenery!
The Front Door
No surprises, the front door is spot number one to hang a beautiful Christmas wreath. The front door is your home’s entryway therefore is bound to make the first impression on all visitors, throughout the Christmas season.
One good tip is this: don’t just hang a wreath on the front door. Frame the doorway with a garland decorated in like manner to the wreath, and add a cluster of oversized jingle bells!
Picture Windows
Any windows, inside or outside your home, are the perfect frame for a wreath, but the best place to take advantage of the negative space that windows produce is anywhere your home has a picture window. Whether at the front of your house or overlooking the yard, picture windows are wide open and perfect for hanging wreaths.
One bit of advice: make sure you light these wreaths so that they really make the house pop at night!
On the Patio
If your home has apatio, then a lit or unlit Christmas wreath is a great way to spread some Christmas cheer out there. Anywhere you have an outdoor seating area, enclosed or not, is a great opportunity for decorating with some wisely-chosen Christmas greenery.
On the Shed
Does your home have a shed? If so, the side of the shed (or the main door of the shed) is a blank canvas for decorating with a Christmas wreath. This is one area where the wreath doesn’t necessarily need to be lit. Just decorate with a bit of Christmas ribbon, some ornaments, and maybe a few picks and sprays and you’re good to go!
Right on the Wall
If there’s anywhere in your home where there’s a big, wide open wall that lacks any sort of wall decor, add a Christmas wreath. The bigger the better, that way it fills the space. And if it’s lit, it will offer a subtle glow at night. Bonus points here if you match the decor on your wreath to that on your Christmas tree!
On the Back of Chairs and On the Front of Cabinets
We love adding some details with little wreaths or other accents! This is a wonderful way to bring amazing intentionality to your own chairs, cabinets, and vent hoods!
Over the Fireplace Mantel
We saved one of the best wreath locations for last: right over the mantel above the fireplace. This is a classic place to hang your wreath; just make sure you drape a Christmas garland over the mantel, right underneath the wreath!
How to Decorate Your Christmas Wreath
Now that you hopefully have your location picked out (or better, several) you need to think about how you want to decorate your Christmas wreath. Here are just a few ideas.
Christmas Lights
Hanging an unlit Christmas wreath is actually a really nice traditional way to showcase one, but all the same, some wreaths look better lit, especially those hung in windows or over the mantel. You can either decorate yourself or buy a pre-lit wreath. The choice is yours, but make sure the light color and color temperature vibe with the rest of your decorations!
Christmas Ribbon
Whatever Christmas ribbon you used in your tree or your other Christmas greenery, that’s a good bet to use in your wreath. Alternatively, you can use different ribbons from the same Christmas collection.
Either way, two great ways to decorate with ribbon are to weave the ribbon in and out of the wreath so that it billows, or to create a bow from the ribbon and hang that in the wreath.
Ornaments
Choose two or three different kinds of ornaments (shatterproof ornaments are great here), preferably of different sizes, and place them in the wreath. Choose from the same collection as your other decorations to ensure the ornaments reflect the same colors, motifs, and overall theme.
Christmas Floral Accents
Some Christmas wreaths will look better with the addition of some floral accents, and we offer so much more than just poinsettias. Take a look through our full collection of Christmas flowers to find what appeals to you. Also, quick note: you can bend and trim the stems of our floral accents to make them easier to insert into a wreath.
Picks and Sprays
Lastly, you can create custom themed accents for your Christmas wreath with some carefully chosen picks and sprays. Take a look through the same collection where you got your other accents for some inspiration. Here’s another tip: use more of the same picks and sprays you used to create the tree topper for your Christmas tree!
Beyond the Basics: Getting More from Your Christmas Wreaths
We hope you found this short guide helpful and that it offered you some inspiration for where to hang your Christmas wreaths as well as how to decorate them.
Remember, a good tip is to complement the look and feel of your tree and other Christmas greenery in the wreath you pick out and how you decorate it.
Beyond that, let your inspiration for your vision take over!
By the way, one more pro tip for you is this: if you like the way the wreath looks where it’s hung, leave it there after the Christmas season is over and swap out the accents to better reflect the holidays at that time of year. Many Christmas wreaths can be repurposed for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and other important holidays!
