Artificial Christmas trees will never fade or need trimming or water, and they never drop needles. They will remain as vibrant many seasons from now as the day you first receive them.
There is also a great deal of variety in artificial trees with respect to height, width, and other features. This high-level guide will take you through some of our selection and offer a few decorating tips so you can have your BEST Christmas EVER!
Choosing Your Artificial Christmas Tree: Height and Width
The first thing you need to consider before you pick out an artificial tree from a Christmas tree store is how big you want it to be.
If this will be your main Christmas tree in your family room or sitting area, and you want it to serve as a focal point, bigger can be better.
Your ceiling height is the main limiter. For rooms with low ceilings, between 8 and 9 feet, 7.5’ trees might be best. If you have a vaulted ceiling, bigger trees, 9’ and even 10’ trees can be ideal.
Fuller artificial trees are better for open spaces as they create a sharper impression, but in areas where there’s less space, or you need to decorate a nook or corner, we also offer slimmer trees.
These slim trees are also better in rooms in which there isn’t a lot of space. The same notes apply for height with slim trees as they do with standard trees.
You will also want to consider the number of points or tips the tree has; in general, the higher the number of tips, the fuller the tree will look.
Also, a higher number of tips will give you more room for adding Christmas ornaments, offering you more flexibility with decorating.
Green vs. Flocked Trees
The classic artificial Christmas tree is a green tree, meant to capture the realistic details of natural greenery.
However, there are also flocked trees which deliver the impression of being lightly dusted with fresh snow.
These flocked trees are perfect for interiors that are white or neutral in character, but they can also be used to produce a winter-wonderland aesthetic, and work perfectly with other white, gold, silver, and even blue Christmas decorations.
Either could make a great choice for your home but ultimately it comes down to what sort of aesthetic you want to create with your other Christmas decorations.
Unlit vs. Prelit Artificial Trees
Unlit Christmas trees are highly versatile and generally more durable than prelit trees. This makes them an ideal choice if you want to decorate with different lights year after year.
However, there are also prelit trees with color-changing lights that grant you a lot of flexibility as well.
On the flipside, prelit Christmas trees are convenient and save you time when putting up the tree. They also save you the trouble of dealing with tangled light strands!
In addition to their time-saving convenience, many prelit trees have a variety of pre-programmed settings that you can customize to the theme of your interior.
All in all, while unlit trees offer flexibility, they can take longer to decorate than prelit trees, which offer the highest degree of convenience.
Artificial Tree Decorating Tips
Now that you have your eye on a specific artificial tree (or at least have an idea!) here are some high-level decorating tips.
- If you have an unlit tree, start with the Christmas lights. You can add your other Christmas ornaments and decorations after you’ve lit the tree.
- After you’ve lit the tree, choose two to three different Christmas ribbon patterns from one of our collections and create billows through the body of the tree to fill out the tree and add color. - Choose a variety of Christmas ornaments that reflect your overall theme. An easy way to get some ideas for inspiration is to show through the same collection when shopping for ornaments.
- If you have small children or pets, consider shatterproof ornaments, which offer all the aesthetic beauty of real glass ornaments, but which are less likely to break and are safer.
- After you’ve added your Christmas ribbon and ornaments, you can choose some Christmas flowers, as well as picks and sprays, and insert these into the body of the tree wherever there are dark spots that need a little more color and movement.
- While there are plenty of pre-made tree toppers for Christmas trees, you can also make your own by choosing two to three different styles of picks and sprays. For more details on how to make your own tree topper, see the previous video.
