First, let’s talk about all the best ideas for where to place a tabletop Christmas tree.

  • Counters: If you have a lot of open counter space, capitalize on that by adding a mini Christmas tree and trimming it with decorations that match the rest of the aesthetic of the space.
  • Shelves: Open shelf space, either on decorative shelves or bookshelves, is prime space for a mini Christmas tree. Plus, if you use a pre-lit mini tree, that can add some ambiance to your favorite spaces!
  • Desks: Open desktop space is perfect for a mini Christmas tree if it’s the right size, and it can add some ambient light and color to the desk or office space as well.
  • Entryways: If you have a little table or pedestal in your entryway, a mini Christmas tree is just perfect. You can also bring in an elevated look to your entryways by placing smaller Christmas trees on either side of the doorway, reflecting the rest of your decorating aesthetic.

  • Mantels: Just like decorative nutcrackers, mini Christmas trees are perfect for the mantel. Add a Christmas garland for a polished look.
  • Alcoves and nooks: Those recessed spaces in your home are absolutely perfect for tabletop Christmas trees, especially if you light the tree, as that will add depth, dimension, and a warm glow to the adjacent setting.

What Is the Ideal Size for a Tabletop Christmas Tree?

Now that we know some great places to place a tabletop Christmas tree, we should consider an appropriate size. There is no one-size fits all solution, however - let the space where you intend to set up the tree dictate how tall and wide it should be. That said, 2 to 4 feet tall is a good size for most general applications, with most mini Christmas trees falling between 18” and 24” in height.

So you’ve got a space for your tabletop tree - now you need to decorate! Here are just a few ways to trim to perfection:

  • Lights: Most tabletop Christmas trees are not lit, but you can add string lights or fairy lights to them to bring them to life. This will infuse the setting with a soft light and create an interesting focal point.

  • Ribbon: If the tree is large enough, consider adding some Christmas ribbon to offer some more color. Since these trees are smaller, one type of ribbon is usually enough in a 2” size, two to three varieties on full sized trees.
  • Ornaments: For a tiny tree, scale back the size of the Christmas ornaments, but pick them from the same Christmas collection to bring a sense of harmony to your Christmas decor. If you’re decorating a kid’s room, library, or other specialty space, enjoy changing it up and finding a fresh design!
