Intentionally Celebrate When Kids Go Back To School with These Craft Ideas

Aug 2nd 2021

The school year is fast approaching and before long, our little ones will be embarking on an adventure as they return to school. One practice that I have adopted recently is to be more intentional in celebrating and turning the everyday moments into extraordinary ones. August is no different, and this year, I am on a quest to make it extra special with some creative back to school ideas!

When Kids Go Back to School

As the summer days are winding down, our to-do lists are revving up, but adding a few festive and fun elements help us stay grounded in joy, regardless of the mess of everyday things! You, your kids, and their teachers will appreciate the time and effort you put into anything sweet, and we're loving this list that has a back to school crafted giftable, creative breakfast, super snack, and last memory to hold on to!

Here are my favorite fun ideas to celebrate when kids go back to school!

Crayon Wreath Back to School Craft

First up, treat your child’s teacher to a little something special to brighten up her classroom!

This adorable crayon wreath craft is easy to make and fun to involve the children. Start by purchasing an unfinished wood wreath; these can be found at any craft store. Use a hot glue gun and glue Crayola crayons all the way around the wreath. Pay special attention to the text, making sure it is facing up.

Once the crayons are glued in the wreath formation, add in some embellishments like a cute bow or even a chalkboard with the teachers name. This will make the perfect gift for meet the teacher night or the first day!

Kid Friendly and Fun Breakfast

Next up, start their morning with a special breakfast full of their favorite foods to give them the energy for their first day. This recipe for breakfast sushi would be cute and memorable. Since the first day of school only happens once a year, feel free to celebrate with sprinkles! Not in the mood for breakfast sushi, check out these other kid-friendly breakfast recipes here

Invite the neighborhood kids over and enjoy this sheet pan snack board full of colorful components that are sure to please. Add in your child’s favorites to create a charcuterie board for kids. Another fun take would be to do muffin tin snack trays - include a different treat in each cup!

To get you started, here are some ideas:

  • Alphabet crackers
  • Apples and dip
  • Goldfish
  • Strawberries and blueberries
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Animal crackers
  • Cheese
  • Whatever your heart desires!

Back To School Scavenger Hunt

If you are looking for an after school activity, look no further! This school supply scavenger hunt is so fun and can be done with items you most likely already have around the house! Print off the scavenger hunt here

Hide the items in advance and let them go to work trying to find each supply on the list. This could also be done prior to the first day to get them acclimated to their supplies.

Document the First Day of School: School Bus Picture Frame

A first day back is not complete without a photo! This adorable school bus picture frame craft is too cute and will be treasured for years to come.

You will need yellow, black and gray acrylic paint, red round jewels, and a paint brush.

Start by painting craft sticks - you will need 7 yellow, 1 gray, and 1 black. At this point, get your kids involved! Glue the sticks together to create the frame. Embellish with the jewels to make taillights. Use hot glue to secure. Attach the photo to the back using hot glue.
