One of the great things about Christmas ribbon is the versatility; you can use a few styles of ribbon that’s aligned with your color schemes and more to decorate your Christmas tree, garlands and other greenery, match toyour Christmas wrapping paper, and so much else.
Another thing you can do with Christmas ribbon is make bows, and if you're looking to add an elegant touch to your Christmas decorations, you're in the right place. Today, we’re going to share an updated bow tutorial using some gorgeous white and silver Christmas ribbons—perfect for tree toppers, wreaths, garlands, or even gift wrapping. Let's dive right in!
Christmas Ribbon and Other Materials You'll Need:
- Let It Snow Embroidered Ribbon (a beautiful white, snowy design)
- Silver Mesh Glitter Ribbon (adds texture and depth)
- Embellished Dupioni with Jeweled Scroll Ribbon (with bling and jewels for extra sparkle)
- Floral Wire (to hold everything together)
How to Make This Multi-Ribbon Bow:
1. Start with the "Let It Snow" Ribbon
We will start with this snowy ribbon because it gives such a soft, wintery feel. Let the ribbon drop to the floor to give yourself more control while you work. Here's how to get started:
- Pinch the Christmas ribbon at the end to create a tail.
- Then we’ll create some loops by folding the ribbon and pinching it tightly.
- To add more dimension, twist the ribbon before folding it again. Make sure the twist brings the ribbon back to the front for an even loop.
- Repeat this process to create three loops of the "Let It Snow" ribbon, almost like you’re pleating it. After each loop, twist and fold until you have the desired number of loops.
- Trim the ribbon at a diagonal for a neat finish.
2. Add the Embellished Ribbon
Next, it’s time to add some sparkle with this beautiful embellished ribbon. I recommend having the tail go in the opposite direction of the previous ribbon to create balance.
- Pinch and pleat the ribbon just like you did before.
- Twist the ribbon to secure each loop, and fold to create the next loop.
- Repeat to make three loops of the embellished ribbon. (Pro tip: If you’re having a hard time making loops with this Christmas ribbon, get some lighter, cheaper ribbon and practice making loops till you have the process down!)
- Cut at a diagonal to finish off the edges.
- As the Christmas ribbon gets thicker, be sure to hold it with your whole hand to make it easier on your fingers.
3. Bring in the Silver Mesh Ribbon
For the final touch, the silver mesh ribbon will add a bit of texture and shimmer. Again, make sure the tail goes in the opposite direction of the previous ribbons.
- Pleat and twist as you did with the others, creating loops until you have three loops.
- Cut the mesh ribbon at a diagonal to finish.
4. Secure with Floral Wire
Now that you’ve layered your ribbons, it's time to bring everything together:
- Now that you’ve layered your ribbons, it's time to bring everything together:
- Take your floral wire and wrap it around the center of the bow.
- Twist the wire tightly to secure the bow in place.
- Trim any excess wire from the tail.
5. Fluff Your Bow
Once the wire is in place, it’s time to fluff up your bow to give it that beautiful, full shape:
- Once the wire is in place, it’s time to fluff up your bow to give it that beautiful, full shape:
- Start by gently pulling the loops in different directions to open them up.
- Go through each loop with your hands to separate and fluff them up. The wired ribbon will hold its shape nicely.
- Fluff each tail and loop until it looks just right.
6. Finishing Touches
For a polished look, take any tails that are too long and fish-tail the edges:
- Fold the tail in half and cut at a diagonal to create a decorative V-shape.
- This simple detail adds a professional touch to your bow.
There You Have It! A Gorgeous Bow Ready for Your Christmas Decorations
Now you have a stunning, multi-loop bow made with three beautiful types of Christmas ribbon that’s perfect for decorating your Christmas tree, wreaths, garlands, or even your staircase banister. You can use this technique with any ribbon combination you like, whether it's a single ribbon or multiple layers for a more dramatic effect. Here’s another pro tip: mix and match some Christmas ornaments, picks and sprays, and other decorations from the same collection you got the ribbon from to create a balanced, harmonious, color and theme-aligned Christmas display.
Remember, practice makes perfect! If you're new to bow-making, don’t worry if it feels a little tricky at first. Keep practicing with inexpensive ribbon until you feel confident with the technique.
