Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Valentine’s Day Christmas Tree
A Valentine’s Day tree is a whimsical and elevated way to celebrate love. Here’s how to create a masterpiece that’s sure to steal hearts.
Start with the Right Tree
A white, flocked, green or soft blush tree can set the stage beautifully for Valentine’s decor. Place it in a focal point of your home—whether that’s a living room corner or near a window where it can catch some sparkles in natural light. There’s nothing better than enjoying crisp winter sunshine with a seasonal tree! We chose to use the green this year as it played with the pinks beautifully!
1. Create Your Topper
We used several varieties of sprays with the lollipop feature to craft a stunning look and handmade the card for the top. If you get your kids or grandkids involved in these projects, it becomes an even better family affair! You can reference the card below to get the estimates of numbers of sprays, florals, ribbon and ornaments — but this is a base for finding the right amounts to get a high coverage look - feel free to play with the decor you get to find what feels right for you!
Having a variety of sprays is how we crafted this stunning topper.
2. Ribbon Is Your Secret Weapon
Ribbon is the foundation of any elevated tree in our decorating method! Choose a mix of wide (4”) and narrow (1.5-2.5”) ribbons in coordinating shades of pink, red, white or metallics. Patterns like stripes, polka dots, or subtle florals add personality and we use these as the “primary” or top ribbon and layer a “supporting pattern” or “basic color” under it. Our favorite addition is these cute drippy velvet bows as accents - or other cute 2” wired ribbon. Start at the top and cascade the ribbons down the tree, creating soft waves and loops that weave through the branches.
3. Add Sprays Throughout
If you’ve followed us for any length of time, you’ll know that we typically use flowers (poinsettias) and sprays to create floral clusters – which we absolutely LOVE! But in this design, we used the larger glitter and shatterproof ornaments to create the main focal points throughout the tree design. But we do place these amazing sprays throughout the tree to add movement and texture!
4. Layer in Ornaments
This is where your creativity shines. Mix heart-shaped signs, sparkly baubles, and textured pieces like sparkles and glass. Begin with larger ornaments to create structure, then add smaller ones to fill gaps and add dimension. Stick to the pink and red color palette for a unique look.
Other Decorative Elements You Can Coordinate With
Garlands
Garlands are versatile and can add romance to mantels, staircases, or door frames. Use lush red and white or regular greenery as a base, then weave in fun shatterproof and jewel ornaments for a decidedly Valentine’s Day look!
Purchase a PVC wreath (this red and white is an adorable option!) and we used 30+ ornaments of varying sizes.
Step #1 - Figure out the pattern you want to use and pick 5 of 6 different ornament styles.
Step #2 - Once you get your supplies in, use floral wire to tie a few ornaments together and attach to the garland. You can attach the garland first and then add the ornaments to make sure they are secured well and are in place without having to move!
Step #3 Enjoy your fantastic design!
Smaller Tree Design
If you’re interested in decorating a 3-5’ Christmas tree, here’s an amazing example of a smaller look — Kristin’s broken down the steps for decorating a smaller seasonal Valentine’s Day tree for your convenience! These are perfect for an entryway, kid’s bedroom, or on your kitchen island.
Centerpieces
A stunning centerpiece is the key to an elegant Valentine’s Day tablescape. Start with a statement vase or bowl in a neutral finish. Fill it with pink and red faux florals, adding greenery for depth. Layer in candles or smaller decorative elements like heart figurines or gold accents. Keep it balanced but full for a polished look.
Wreaths
A wreath is the perfect way to greet guests with a touch of Valentine’s cheer. We love the simple addition of a velvet bow but you can also create a stunning look with our traditional method! Use a base of greenery, then add ribbons, floral picks, and ornaments to match your theme. Whether you choose a traditional round shape or a trendy heart-shaped wreath, make it lush and full for maximum impact.
