Choosing a prelit Christmas tree isn’t just about the color of the tree or the lights, although those things are important. It is also about choosing based on height.
A tree that is too tall will make a space feel cramped; a tree that is too short will leave too much negative space and make a room feel cold.
This short post should help you identify what size tree to choose for a space.
General Notes for Tree Sizing
Depending on the atmosphere you are trying to achieve, more than one size of tree can work in a given space. However, most would tell you that a tree should fill out a space adequately, making skinny trees ideal for alcoves and nooks and larger-sized, fuller trees better in open spaces.
Also, as for height, a general recommendation would be to leave at least 6” of space between the top of the tree and the ceiling. If you wish to create a large tree topper, you can leave up to a foot of space to accommodate for that.
5 Foot Prelit Trees
Don't underestimate the impact of a smaller Christmas tree. A 5-foot tree may not be the tallest tree in the room, but it can still make a big statement.
These trees are perfect for apartments, bedrooms, entryways, offices, breakfast nooks, and any space where a full-size tree might feel overwhelming. They also make wonderful accent trees, allowing you to bring a little extra Christmas magic into multiple rooms throughout your home.
If you're working with limited square footage or lower ceilings, a 5-foot pre-lit tree can create all the warmth, charm, and holiday spirit of a larger tree—just in a more compact footprint. With the right ribbon, ornaments, and decorative accents, these smaller trees can become some of the most memorable displays in your home.
6 Foot Trees

A 6-foot Christmas tree is one of those "just right" sizes.
It's tall enough to make a statement, yet compact enough to fit comfortably in smaller spaces and homes with lower ceilings. Whether it's anchoring a cozy living room, brightening a home office, or adding holiday charm to a bedroom or kitchen, a 6-foot tree brings plenty of Christmas magic without overwhelming the space.
It's also one of the easiest tree sizes to decorate. With no ladder required for most people, you can focus on the fun part—adding ribbon, ornaments, florals, and all the special details that make a tree uniquely yours.
If you love the cozy feel of a 5-foot tree but want a little more decorating space, a 6-foot tree might be the perfect fit.
7.5 Foot Prelit Christmas Trees

Even though 7.5 foot Christmas trees only have 6 inches on 7 foot trees, that actually look and feel a lot larger. It’s something you have to experience to understand. They're the right size for an 8 foot room.
All the same, 7.5 foot Christmas trees are also exceptionally versatile, though they are a bit too tall to use in rooms with 8 foot ceilings, especially if you will be decorating with a tree topper. Save them for rooms with higher ceilings, such as 9 foot ceilings.
9 Foot Trees
Once you have a ceiling that’s in excess of 9 feet, say, a 10 foot or even an 11 foot ceiling, then taller Christmas trees like 9 foot Christmas trees start to become more appropriate.
These larger, taller trees will fill a space and reach nearer to the ceiling, producing a more impressive effect than shorter prelit trees would make in the same space.
10 Foot Trees
Among the tallest of prelit Christmas trees, 10 foot trees are ideal for large, open spaces with high ceilings, such as large halls, family rooms with open concept designs and vaulted ceilings, and any other large, open interior space.
Any open concept space with a high ceiling can be a good candidate for a 10 foot prelit Christmas tree.
