Fall is the perfect season to let your creative inspiration take over; the weather is great, the trees and fields are changing, and everything takes on a new coat of colors for just a short while before colder weather comes.

It’s a great time to get inspired and make your home the best it can be with some wisely chosen fall decorations. Consider this your high-level fall decor guide for the season!

Fall Decorations: General Considerations

When decorating for the fall season, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Is there a specific holiday you’re decorating for? Fall has two big holidays, both of which have some unique decorations associated with them. There is some crossover between Halloween decorations and Thanksgiving decorations. Many fall decorations, such as pumpkins, leaf and harvest-themed decorations can be used for both.
  • The style or theme of the decorations you choose. Many of the decorations in our collections are assorted based on color, style, and general style. To create a cohesive, balanced atmosphere, try to choose decorations from the same or similar collections.
  • Where you intend to decorate or place the decorations. You might choose to decorate only one room in your home, or the whole house. You should also consider the size of the fall decor you choose as this will impact how well it fits into the setting.

Types of Fall Decor

There are many different types of fall decor out there, many of which can be combined. Here are some of the best accents.

  • Fall wreaths. Fall wreaths are often made of grapevine or with colored leaf accents reflecting the season, such as red, yellow, orange, gold or bronze. They’re great for decorating windows, doors, walls, and other negative spaces.
  • Fall garlands. Fall garlands are often made with leaves and berries in fall colors, and can be placed over mantles, doorways, on railings, stairways and architectural features, and elsewhere in your home.
  • Fall accents. Fall accents, ranging from plush pumpkins to fall resin and fall pillows, have a bunch of different use cases and can be used to support the general theme of the setting.

  • Fall wall art. Fall wall art like signs can be used to fill negative spaces around your home, especially in rooms that have other decorations.
  • Fall-themed picks and sprays. Fall-themed picks and sprays are primarily useful for filling out fall wreaths and garlands, though they can also be used to decorate fall-themed trees or placed in pitchers and other containers to make centerpieces.
  • Fall ribbon is a beautiful finishing touch that adds warmth, texture, and seasonal charm to your décor. Available in a variety of rich colors, cozy patterns, and textured fabrics, it's the perfect accent for fall wreaths, garlands, swags, and other greenery. Whether you're tying a simple bow or weaving ribbon throughout your display, it's an easy way to create a layered, designer-inspired look.
  • Outdoor fall decor. With fall and Halloween inflatables and yard accents, you aren’t just restricted to decorating the interior of your home.

Best Places in Your Home for Fall Decor

The entryway and living room aren’t the only two places in your home you can decorate. Here’s a more comprehensive list:

  • The kitchen and dining areas. Place some fall accents on countertops; add a fall wreath over the hood above your range, or place a fall garland over the windows. You can also make a centerpiece for the table with a wreath, garland, and some accents like picks, sprays and ribbon.
  • Bathrooms. Fall accents on the countertops are great here as well, as is fall wall decor. You can also add some fall-scented candles to bathrooms for a nice touch.
  • Entryways. Entryways, especially the front door, are some of the best places to accent with fall decor. Some bales of hay, cornstalks, pumpkins and gourds can make great decorations. Add a wreath or sign to the front door, deck the doorframe with a garland and some lights, and you’ll have a beautiful entryway.

Living areas and offices. The living room is naturally a wonderful place to decorate with fall accents. Some throw pillows for the seating, a garland or two for the table or mantle, or even a whole fall-themed tree can be great for the setting.

Important Fall Decor FAQs

Still have questions before you get started with your fall decorating this year? Here are some of the more common questions we hear. See if yours is answered here and get in touch with us if you don’t see it listed!

  1. When’s the best time to decorate for fall?

There is no right or wrong answer, but most people decorate for fall between September and October, and you can leave decorations up until you decorate for Christmas. You can also put up different fall decor at different times during the season. For instance, you can put up Halloween decorations in September or October and then switch for more general fall or Thanksgiving decor after Halloween is over, but before Christmas.

  2. What’s the best place to decorate with fall decor?

The living room and entryway are two great places to put up fall decor, but other great areas include the front and back yards, patio, kitchen and dining areas, bathrooms, hallways, and offices.

  3. What are the most versatile fall decorations?

Fall wreaths and garlands are some of the most versatile fall decorations, but they're just the beginning. Decorative pumpkins, lanterns, candles, ribbon, and other seasonal accents can be used in countless ways to create a cozy autumn look throughout your home.

  4. How long can I leave up fall decorations?

As long as you want, but most people will take them down whenever they start to decorate for Christmas.

  5. Are fall and Thanksgiving decorations the same?

While Thanksgiving features a few signature decorations like cornucopias and turkey-themed accents, most Thanksgiving décor overlaps beautifully with traditional fall decorating. Pumpkins, gourds, wreaths, garlands, lanterns, candles, and autumn greenery transition seamlessly from early fall through Thanksgiving, making them timeless pieces you'll enjoy all season long.
